The Australian Government defines a higher degree by research, as distinct from a coursework program, as a program where the assessable content by research represents more than two-thirds of the total assessable content.

A higher degree by research (HDR) is a term that collectively refers to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), Master of Philosophy (MPhil), and Doctor of Biotechnology.

Research is undertaken across the academic disciplines, in areas as diverse as molecular biology, law, engineering, health and rehabilitation, human movement, midwifery, education, and music.

An HDR student produces new knowledge and expertise in their chosen field that is innovative, relevant and progressive.
